You feel that when you read this book. This book is filled with the words”like” and “as if”. I like the narration by Rebecca Lowman.
She remembers how getting to know him inadvertently set her on a path that changed her circle of friends, her career, and her fortune. It has a special feel to it. This is a flesh-and-blood tale you believe in, with fabulous period detail.
An example, the Belmont race-tracks. They are referred to as “Race-Arounds”. Reading this was my chance to see if he was a one trick pony. Would it happen like that? Towles is spectacular at description and atmosphere, keeping a keen camera’s eye on the city with a polished pedigree of writing that is rare in a debut novel.
There is the honking of the cabs, there are the dark summer nights, there is the hot, sticky air in the summer. It is certainly for the well-read. I don’t even know what the book was trying to do. I like the non-preachy examination of wealth, class and ambition in America. True, she was only five foot five, but she knew how to dance in two-inch heels–and she knew how to kick them off as soon as she sat in your lap.

So much more than the title and the summary, this book now has a place in my heart and on my shelf, right next to Gentleman. Who did Katey Kontent marry?

Elegant and exuberant…a year in a life and what a year it was! From here on in the story belongs to Katey and it’s a richly told tale. What sort of things is Katey slow to reveal; and what drives her reticence? The setting of New York, the city would not normally make me clamor to read this book, but the New York that Rules of Civility depicts civilihy me right away.
With that shocking consideration as a backdrop, three friends and I formed a group to read extraordinary works of literature.

I do know that perfection, those amazing moments where everything lines up from the moon to the breeze are dules and far between. She is an energy vampire. The book was optioned by Lionsgate to be made into a feature film and its French translation received the Prix Fitzgerald.
I too find a church most spiritual between services when the thunder of religious verbosity is dissipating into the distance.
