Thanks for telling us about the problem. In the chaos of the evening, Alovisa ends up running into D’Elmont’s sword.

Having sworn off women, D’Elmont nonetheless continues to receive romantic attention. D’Espernay is disgusted by his sister’s amorousness, even though he is not innocent, either. Number 17 of Books you must read before you die. At first, I could not haywooc Delmont. Books by Eliza Fowler Haywood. This book was difficult to get into but worth it in the end. The novel also highlights the frustration of women in the time period, who were forbidden from expressing their desires or affections toward a yaywood until he expressed romantic feelings toward them.

Love in Excess – Second Edition – Broadview Press

Despite being affianced to Violetta the chaste “good” womanFrankville had fallen in love with a woman named Camilla, inciting the vengeance of Violetta’s villainous father Cittolini, who is described as a “possessor of immense riches”. If only I’d had more patience with the story. He isn’t particularly fussy until half way through, where he decides he should really stick with one woman Melliora after all, and despite all the temptations thrown in his path from then on read – women throwing themselves at his feetremains steadfastly faithful, until – SPOILER ALERT – they coincidentally meet in an inn in the middle of nowhere after she has been kidnapped by the inn keeper and everybody lives happily ever after.

The first part concludes with a mutual decision by Brillian and D’Elmont to marry the sister-pair Alovisa and Ansellina with love, status, and wealth as motivations for the respective matches. It was written by a woman and shows women who have their own sexual agendas. A work of amatory fictionLove in Excess offers many models of female desire, and ultimately articulates the earlyth century “cultural shift toward a companionate model of marriage.

Part the Second deals with D’Elmont’s falling in “true” love with Melliora, a girl entrusted in his care. This must be the most difficult book I’ve ever read. Eliza Haywood’s book was one of the most popular novels in its day, competing with Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. He rejects others, one because she is too forceful and obvious in her passion for him and he finds it a turn off, and another who while loving him discreetly from afar is no competition for his ward.

This early 18th-century novel is more interesting as a literary history document, but its story is compelling enough if you enjoy romance novels for the record, I’ve never read a romance novel.

Jun 15, Alex rated it really liked it Shelves: In addition to this dedicatory letter, Chetwood also included several prefatory poems. And there are plenty of steamy almost-sex scenes, woo! Characters that you despised in one part of the book become heroes in others. Yet all the time Haywood I was expecting a far more juicy tale to begin with, hearing as this was the most scandalous book ever to be published and how it was a best seller of the 50 Shades of Grey format back in it’s day.

Love in Excess – Second Edition

So why does this book have 2 stars instead of 1? So I just finished reading this book today.

It’s much better than plenty of other books from its era. Hurry up and finish! While Eliza Haywood was a successful writer in her time hayowod was also frowned upon for writing of the true nature of women’s feelings and desires, which then were supposed to be suppressed and only expressed when a man expressed his first.

The language is about as dense and tangled as Count D’elmont’s pubic hair, and what’s worse is that the often self-conscious narrative style makes no attempt to be succinct.

So despite the book’s flaws, there’s still some interesting stuff going on here that’s worthy of study.

The psychological arc of the story is in D’elmont gaining a peek-through-the-window-blinds shred of sympathy for the position he puts women in. Which wasn’t graphic, at all. Characters, in my first two experiences with the 18th century English novel which is a course I’m currently takingare completely and utterly without depth.

But the novel’s weaknesses haywood many. Jan 23, Ana rated it it was ok Shelves: So much drama, that it was entertaining. The characters are cardboard, 18th century soap opera cliches. I disliked how D’Elmont as the hero was able to hwywood away with his poor treatment of his first love and his wife and even eeliza unsuccessful and downright devious attempts at seduction of his ward and still come out a triumphant in his love. Jul 01, Jeff rated it liked it.

Melliora secures her own freedom to leave with D’Elmont through an elaborate plot.

Instead the lectures focused on his “love” for her, and explaining the qualities of a “redeemable rake. Safe to say it was gaywood quite scandalous for it’s time, especially as the blurb points out, since it depicts not only the lust of men, but also, and perhaps especially of women.

The list is many for the women who fell for and became smitten with Delmont and each one, more ridiculous than the last. B, he starts off vile enough that you’re not likely to root for him to get with Melliora, who is not his wife and whom he nearly succeeds in raping early on. And while there is lots of preludes baywood sex in this novel, amazingly, there is never any actual intercourse, if you’re paying attention. But I wouldn’t pick this one up if I was looking for a light-read don’t let the book’s relative shortness throw you off.

Which wasn’t graphic, at al Modern formatting, I will never again take you for escess. During the course of lpve conversation, it is revealed that the Chevalier has fallen in love with Alovisa’s sister Ansellina who resides in Amien. This novel takes a lot of intense focus or at least it did for me because of the 18th century language and spelling.
