Review: Alessandro Manzoni’s “The Betrothed” – Fare Forward

Manzoni depicts Federigo himself as something close to a saint. I’ve tried reading this book about 3 times, and I have the Pocket Penguin Classics copy. I’m reading this VERY slowly On impulse, the Unnamed leaves his castle in order to meet this man.

This novel is also about wonderful character studies. It is said to be universally recognized as the greatest of all Italian novels and is often compared to Tolstoy’s “War and Peace.

When I saw through bbetrothed eyes of Renzo the pathetic situation of plague in Milan, it repulsed me. Religion or the lack of it permeates the novel, perhaps alessanrro reason why it does not have, for most educated Americans, the resonance of the other great novels.
