The new characters added to the story were fun, and the addition of the perspicacious loris? Although, I think these books have the most effective use of world building. Some new machines and creatures are presented. The plot moves along at a good pace and is complicated enough for older readers to enjoy, whilst being explained clearly enough for younger readers to follow. The story itself, while very good, lagged in the middle of the novel. It was very fast-paced and full of dangerous situations.

The Germans or the Clankers use mechanical contraptions sadly lacking wheels. I didn’t think it would scoft possible to love certain characters even more. Does he really know who Deryn is? Keith Thompson has done a brilliant job detailing both mechanical and biological worlds in the books, and the pictures add a great deal to the story that text alone would have missed out on.
