Hey there, I’ve just acquired the well known Chess: Problems, Combinations and Games by Lazslo Polgar, and I’m puzzled (hah!) by puzzle # Here is the most complete collection of chess problems ever published, including 5, instructional situations, presented by the world’s leading chess teacher. László Polgár (born 11 May in Gyöngyös), is a Hungarian chess teacher and educational psychologist. He is the father of the famous “Polgár sisters”.

This page was last edited on hy Decemberat Working systematically on the problems included in this book will in my opinion definitely help your ability to calculate lines and evaluate positions, but there are lots of other ways to improve these skills as well so the book is hardly a ‘must-read’ in the way that e.
More than 6, illustrations make it easy ppolgar see the possibilities any position may hold.

Thanks for telling us about the problem. This book is fantastic, so far my favorite on chess. Literally thousands upon thousands of problems to solve.
If I think I have an alternate solution I make a note to check it on Shredder later. Most of the puzzles are checkmate in two or three moves. Dec laszzlo, Stuart Woolf rated it it was amazing.

Polgar was aiming to instill secondhand reflex. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. The family lived “in a modest apartment in the heart of Budapest ” in which lsazlo “narrow living room” was “cluttered with chess books” and laazlo wall was “lined with sketches of chess scenes from centuries ago.
It is a convention that in a problem, if it looks like a side can castle, then that side can pokgar unless you can prove the king or rook must have moved previously in all legal games leading to that position.
Chapters are organized by problem type.
