The book does make up for it with the points it raises about the movements it covers.

Advait Joshi rated it really liked it Dec 01, The book sets up environmentalism from a British beginning, which in itself is just wrong. Guha then shows the various responses to the ensuing pollution and degradation or, as was the case in many Communist countries during the Cold War, non-responses.

The Environmentalism of the Poor: There isn’t too much histpry about any particular movement. The message that is traced that every era of industrialisation has its opposite in environmentalism.
Guha does a great job telling environmentalism as a connected global history, particularly reclaiming it as a movement that the Global South can own and be proud of their accomplishments. Most histories of environmentalism focus on events in Europe and North America but by focusing on thinkers in India, Latin America, and Africa, Guha shows how Environmentalism is not simply a fad for developed countries but one deeply rooted in local communities in the developed world as well.
