Among the many constants that appear in mathematics, π, e, and i are the most familiar. Following closely behind is y, or gamma, a constant that arises in many.

Also, familiarity with complex analysis is helpful, but not technically necessary, as there is hqvil decent summary of the subject provided in the appendices. The review must be at least 50 characters long.

## Gamma: Exploring Euler’s Constant

Andrew rated it really liked it Feb 05, The book is full of striking results, and in a appendix gives a notions of complex variable, all understable with the mathematical maturity and backgrund of high school mathematics. First, the explanations are not only complete, but they have the gamam amount of generality This is less the case today, where mathe At the time this book came out, I was going through parts of Whittaker’s famous “Modern Analysis”.

The Meaning of Relativity Albert Einstein. Clearly elaborated proofs here are offered at important points or nulian reasonable generality can be had, but Havil is careful to mark caveats. This chapter also addresses the age-old question of just how many boxes of cereal one can expect to buy in order to collect the whole set of toys being offered. This book is a 5 on content and quality. This is less the case today, where mathematics is far more professionalized than then; which is why I was so delighted by Gamma.

### Gamma: Exploring Euler’s Constant (Julian Havil) – review

Jonathan Cass rated it really liked it Feb 22, Com rated it it was amazing Feb 09, Jones Limited preview – The discussion of Riemann begins with his weighted prime counting function, and things quickly become complex horribly cheesy pun, I know! This is not to say you won’t find motivation here- there’s plenty of that, with backgrounds, anecdotes and general historical exposition providing context for the significance of results and bridging the material.

Here are just two. If you’ve every been enthralled by numbers – even for a moment – this book will bring back that joy.

At any rate, the book does a bang-up job of thoroughly investigating one of the lesser known mathematical constants, and I highly recommend checking it out! They didn’t immediately seek full generalization.

And it is always interesting to end up with my favorite subject, the Riemann Hypothesis. Still a favourite of mine, this is perhaps the best ‘popular’ maths book I’ve agmma come across.

Anyone with a serious interest in math will find it richly rewarding.

This little dude comes in handy surprisingly often; my favorite examples relate to music and the Quicksort algorithm. Hardcoverpages. Charles Mcclain rated it liked it Jul 16, While the breadth of the subjects touched upon makes following Gamma slightly more demanding in comparison to similar books, there’s encouragement to be had here and plenty to follow even if you don’t keep in perfect hafil with the derivations. Then the book presents quite a few methods for approximating the dang thing.
