Dated, and suffering from a lack of clarity and heljtzer. Mel Helitzer’s Comedy Writing Secrets is commonly used as a textbook in college courses on comedy writing. A bit disorganized in my opinion, but Helitzer does write out the prerequisites for humor I think some people make the mistake of thinking that the first thing that they think of is perfect, and they fall in love with it.
The author really knows the ins and outs of the business and is was good enough to teach it to others. The second and easiest way to feel comwdy is to publicly criticize the accomplishments of others. With Comedy Writing Secrets, 2nd editionyou can master the fundamentals of humor writing and wriiting your comedic talent into a well-paying pursuit.

I would rather gone for going deep in universal truths in comedy, not a quick primer on standup followed by a quick primer on writing funny greeting cards. Watch Kevin James King of Queenshe’ll make you laugh without throwing up from disgust.
Perhaps it’s just me personally, but I thought this book was decent until I got to the “Why We Laugh” chapter, and then it all unwound.
The object is to make friends, since we laugh more easily with friends. The personality, the character—not the joke—is primary. Recommended for anyone who wants to know how comedy works. Special attention is payed to the rule of threes and of course the Christian trinity and other biblical examples are brought out as proof of it’s efficiacy. It’s an acronym for the six essential elements that are found in everything from good one-liners to funny anecdotes to full comedy sets:.
This one is very ‘old school’, to be sure, but if you want to understand why some things are funny and why some aren’t, this at least gives you the equations, if not the answers.
