Kodak Xtol

Gives a great tonal range if you got the exposure right. International orders are processed the next shipping day. It takes about a year for me to use a 5 liter batch and I see no negative effects. I really am pleased with the results – good tone separation, fine grain, high accutance and it doesn’t stain I have to use the bathroom for developing and appreciate this quality. The remaining dry chemicals keep much better than mixed developer although the mixed solution keeps at least 2 months if stored properly.

So far it has worked great for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Mimetic from The best developer for BW film! Kodwk only drawback is the packages make 1. In fact, I prefer it. It is an ascorbic acid-based developer, which yields a very high image quality at full emulsion speed. Produces fine grain and high sharpness. Since Xtool work overseas, it’s good to have a developer that’s not very sensitive to xrol water supplies, heat, etc.

Also once mixed and stored in airtight bottles, the developer stays good for months. I get lower contrast than D76 better for scanningsmooth gradations, good shadow and highlights. Keep shaking it until it’s really completely dissolved. It’s basically self-exhausting, too, so it’s hard to overdevelop.

Recipes & dev times using Developer Kodak XTOL

xtil Kodak Professional XTOL is a two-part powder developer suitable for most professional black and white films. Negatives come out sharp and with very little grain. So even though Kodak does not recommend it, I mix one liter at a time. Really let it sit a while and look for tiny un-dissolved particles. I routinely use it to koodak HP5 3 stops and Delta 2 stops with great results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by bmw from Great Economical Developer I don’t develop lots of black and white film so 5 liters is more than I can use before it would go bad.

I tend to use it diluted 1: Images are not particularly contrasty which preserves the maximum amount of detail in both highlights and shadows and can easily be increased in the printing process. This is my favorite developer. For me it consistently produces finer grain and can be used with a wide variety of film.
